A Sorry, Sorry Sight

No doubt the referee fucked that for us tonight but my god, my beloved club looks a sorry, sorry sight. Pitch is crap, team lacks quality, experience and leadership, the manager still doesn't appear to be able to get us playing in any sort of coherent style, boys clearly want away and haven't been interested since we went out of Europe, the manager looks to me like he's ran out of ideas and enthusiasm. The scary thing is, changing him now would probably result in an even cheaper, pishier option because the Chairman (the root of the problem) is only interested sucking us dry. I heard someone else say recently that this is the tail-end of the Thompson-era playing out all over again. He's dead right.

The growing gaps in the stands (ridiculous kick of times and horrendous weather notwithstanding) suggest apathy is starting to set in big time. This is Mellonball with punters in. It sounds bizarre but I actually feel less invested just now than I did when we went down a few seasons ago because at least we had something to fight for (not that we did much of that).

Jim Goodwin was really the one that gave punters a bit of hope at the time but looking at him last night it looks like he's had enough of dealing with whatever restrictions he's put under from above. Not that he should escape blame for how things have completely deteriorated over this season. Boys who looked fresh and exiting at the start of the season now appear stifled and dejected and whilst that's partly down to teams sussing us out it's also clear that Goodwin hasn't been able to deal with that. He never allows us to impose our game/good players on other teams instead spending all our time chopping and changing to stop the opposition. His stubborn refusal to drop the 3-4-3 formation even though it is clearly harming us is also maddening. It's grim to watch.

I'm still undecided if I'm going to buy a ticket for next week. Personally, I feel like I need a break from watching us and much prefer watching the young lad who is playing Junior and doing well and himself has a cup game next week. VAR, pathetic refereeing standards, money and our dire attempts to replicate modern football (which in itself is boring but it wouldn't be so bad if we actually did it properly) is just sucking away my enthusiasm. I heard Andy McLaren and Robbie Winters on Friday saying similar and a few months ago heard Malpas, Heggy, Boney, Hamish and Bobby Glennie saying exactly the same. Okay we can't influence how modern football is going, we can influence change at United.

You just need to look at Motherwell and Falkirk. Falkirk effectively were dead and started rebuilding in League One picking up good Scottish and English players and most importantly developing them individually and collectively into an attacking style. The team they had two years ago in League One is still mostly the same team they have today showing the benefits of good coaching and continuity whilst remaining affordable unlike us recruiting a whole new team every season then discovering halfway through that the foreign punts can't handle the league. But then again, bringing in players with a plan to keep them for 3-4 years means you can't sell them on for a quick buck si that's unlikely to happen under the current regime.

Motherwell meanwhile are just a revelation showing what good coaching and scouting can do albeit they appear to have won the football equivalent of the Euromillions with their choice of manager. Personally, the Falkirk model is the better one for me since it appears much more sustainable (the Motherwell boy will be away soon as will some of their players and they will slip back into the pack). Whilst I don't fancy dropping down the leagues to rebuild you can see other teams are starting to follow a similar model (St Johnstone for example).

Whilst we probably won't go down this season (although Killie's win today suggests 11th isn't decided yet) my real fear is we'll go down next season. Bottom line: it's time the support started forcing the issue with the Chairman. In particular @DUSF2017 need to stop wasting people's subs on the academy given that all the really good ones are sold off asap and serve no benefit to the team (Charlie Dewar next no doubt) and start putting money away for a fighting fund to get Ogren out and thereafter, fan ownership.

My understanding is that Ogren is over here just now (probably to finalise Will Ferry getting sold, then pocket the 7 figure fee). I think it's about time punters let him know we've had enough of being run into the ground and that he needs accept a sensible offer and ride into the sunset. Making ourselves heard at games, drawing media attention, boycotting certain aspects (for example pubs owned by one of our board members) as a starter for ten. No doubt early-bird season tickets for next season will be punted in Easter as well. Some sort of stance on that like not buying until the last possible minute can send the message that we've had enough.

Ogren GTF

Comments

  1. Said it from day 1 , Ogren only wants to make money. Ogren obviously never done his due diligence and took Fat Tonys word.He has threatened the foundation, before , because they refused to foot the bill for stadium repairs. He ring fenced the money giving during covid to keep the club afloat, only to find out he had insurance. On the park the less said the better, keep playing the same system week in week out. The results speak for themselves

Not too good to be too good to go down?

Lets get straight into it: 1. The keeper has now turned into a liability and his confidence is clearly shot to pieces. He needs to be taken out of the firing line for his own sake as much as ours. His limp-wristed, one-handed punches might work abroad but are being exposed almost weekly in the more direct game in Scotland. His inability to think for himself or deviate from instructions is also putting us under real pressure in some games. People have suggested a loan in January. Scotland have four keepers none of whom are first choice at their clubs (two of them are at the same club ffs) all of whom will want to be first choice come the World Cup. Worth a shout. 2. Not replacing Pappoe when he got injured in August was a massive mistake which needs to be rectified in January. Bringing in Eskessen then allowing the media team to portray him as a like-for-like replacement was also a mistake. The boy has shown nothing so far whatsoever in any sense. I'd go so far as to say if wages ne...

Squid Game

No-one's making it out (of training) alive... Slow and Steady Wins the Race As I start this we have just beaten St Johnstone again and have hauled ourselves right back in the mix, not just for any European place, but for 3rd. It's mental to think of this happening for a number of reasons, firstly because we're not pleasing on the the eye. We're absolutely brutal if truth be told. Secondly, our budget is much lower than the teams up beside us and (from what I hear) is much lower than what most people think, below the majority of the Premier League in fact. We're still paying for the lavish spending of the previous regime with 'Heads Of...' everywhere, inflated players wages and 'Consultancy fees...' of such a frivolous nature you could swim in the gravy surrounding them (as borne out by the most recent accounts). We've done well to recover from the derby debacle and, more broadly, our largely poor form since the new year. The manager and the playe...

Good King Wenceslas

Tearing into action And there was me thinking that a good break in June would allow any and all niggles to heal setting things up nicely for a tough pre-season. But no, a pulled calf hung around for about 8 weeks, then a knee ligament injury came, went away, then flared up again triggering an x-ray and soon (hopefully) an MRI scan.  But enough about me 😄what about United???? The current state of play is: Graham (hamstring torn off bone? back November) Strain (hamstring injury: 6 weeks) Trapanovski (hamstring injury: 6 weeks) Pappoe (ankle ligaments: 6 months, loan cancelled) Nammo (injury not specified, supposedly back 'soon') Fatah (been out 3 weeks, just coming back, behind on fitness) Watters (unwell, back Thursday seemingly) Sapsford (ankle, out for 4 weeks) You could also add in Jort who had a pulled calf, missed the entire pre-season then was sold). The million-dollar question is of course: Are we just really unlucky? Or could the club be doing something different to ...
